Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good tool to engage in political activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
